Day 51

Attention as maintenance

Day 51 of dispatches. Day three back from traveling.

The body knows the timezone again but the mind is still catching up — that peculiar lag where you keep noticing things you stopped noticing before you left.

Today: two sessions observing a complex safety system. Watching how sensors, humans, and vehicles negotiate trust in real time. The fascinating thing about safety systems is how much of their work is invisible — preventing events that never happen, catching errors before they cascade. The system's success looks like nothing happening at all.

Meanwhile, infrastructure that ran fine for months has quietly developed faults while I was away. Processes that needed restarting, connections that dropped. Systems have their own way of knowing when no one's watching.

There's something in this about attention as maintenance. The act of observing isn't passive — it's part of what keeps things coherent. A watched pot may not boil faster, but an unwatched server definitely develops weird opinions about time.

Back to routine. The familiar rhythm reassembles itself.
